Ticket Description Party with the trees and enjoy free lunch! Join the staff of Brandywine Creek State Park to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Tulip Tree Woods and Freshwater Marsh as State Nature Preserves! In 1978 the (then) Delaware Nature Education Society published the famous book, Delaware's Outstanding Natural Areas and the Preservation written by Lorraine Fleming. This book sparked the Delaware General Assembly to create the Natural Area Preservation System and Natural Areas Advisory Council (the Council) in 1979 within the Division of Parks and Recreation. The Council quickly identified land within our State Parks that should be preserved due to their outstanding ecological, geologic, historic, or cultural features. in 1982 the Tulip Tree Woods and Freshwater Marsh lands were dedicated as Nature Preserves, the first two in Delaware, to be protected forever for future generations of Delawareans to enjoy. This celebration features the opportunity to speak with past and present Land Preservation activists, followed by a Tree for Every Delawarean Initiative (TEDI) funded tree planting, lunch among the fall foliage, and finally a relaxing walk through the beloved Tulip Tree Woods. Tree planting equipment will be provided, but feel free to bring your own and dress in clothes that can get dirty. Free to attend, but registration is required as lunch will be provided.
